The Awards Trophy

The US-Ireland Research Innovation Awards trophy has been designed by renowned artist Shane Holland and is inspired by one of Ireland’s greatest ever physicists and mathematicians, Sir William Rowan Hamilton. 

Sir William, a former President of the Royal Irish Academy, discovered quaternion algebra in 1843 which is still used today by scientists to position satellites in space, and in the most advanced computer graphics.
